About this deal

Based on the true story of a bear that ate a block of cocaine, this is really the only true story part of the story – in real life the bear ate the cocaine and immediately died, whereas in Banks’ film, it goes on a bloodthirsty rampage, killing all who cross its path. Opening strongly with a dart through its swollen cast, we meet all manner of seemingly cardboard cut-out stereotypes – from the strong but struggling single mother (Keri Russell) to the dealer with a broken heart (Alden Ehrenreich), on to the park ranger with delusions of grandeur (Margo Martindale) and even a handful of spunky and way too old for their years kids (Brooklyn Prince and Christian Convery). It’s clearly not intended to be scary, as the deaths are all played for laughs, but at the same time, there are no real jokes or big laugh scenes.

Detail is absolutely razor sharp, with the expected fine lines of clothing and skin textures all present and correct and nestling nicely alongside the pristine edges of the various locations and sets used throughout. The Blu-ray from Universal looks and sounds very good and there are some marginally interesting extras on the disc as well, making this a pretty well-rounded package for those who may feel the need to add this to their home video library. Un bearable Bloodbath: Dissecting the Kills (1080p, 8:16): Making several of the more grizzly, er, grisly, kills.

When the action ramps up and the bear enters the chat, the low end of the bass kicks into gear with a great rumble that never crosses into rocky territory.Film Masters offers up a double dose of drive-in fun with their double feature Blu-ray release of The Devil’s Partner and Creature From The Haunted Sea.
