Charts and tables (including the 'double fraction' figures that experts want) help collectors identify unknown gemstones and check for genuineness. These first few sections serve as an excellent introduction to, or refresher on, many of the basic concepts that help make identification easier. Gemstones of the World is a conveniently sized and organized reference book for both the casual and serious gemologist. More than 1,500 full-color photos showcase each precious and semiprecious stone in both its rough natural state and its polished and cut renditions.

And then there are the magnificent photographs of the stones themselves in brilliant full-color, with full data on the facing page. By contrast, this book is clearly laid out, informative, includes obscure/little known gemstones, and has good photographs. Physical and chemical properties of each gem or gem group is identified in a header on the top of the left page, followed by notes of interest and specific varieties. Next is a section of “new on the market” gemstones such as sugilite, unakite, and petrified wood; an odd assortment of new and not-so-new offerings.Whether you're a beginner rock enthusiast or geologist, or are looking for a crystal book to support your spirituality practice, Gemstones of the World will bring new beauty and wisdom to your bookshelf. Great book excellent text on Gem stones together with easy accessible information and beautiful photographs. Yet because of clever use of headers, shaded sections, illustrations, and white space, the text never seems cramped.

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. It's not an A to Z as I thought it to be but it's a must have for any serious collectors that want to know the true business side of crystals.
