Ghostbusters the Board Game
About this deal
It’s as close to “Ghostbusters 3” as you’re going to get (what with the actual actors voicing the characters) and is probably going to be better than the upcoming movie with the all-female cast.
Sadly, though, it’s also kind of forgettable and the Ghostbusters license doesn’t feel like it was properly utilised. We cheered good dice rolls that trapped the ghosts, and hung our heads in despair when the dice rolls went south and we saw our health slowly tick away. Ghostbusters: The Board Game is a cooperative game for 1-4 players where each player gets to control the original crew from the 1984 film, trying to close gates that are letting ghosts through to the land of the living. Any of these actions may be taken more than once, so you could potentially move four squares in a single turn or attack twice. Show them a picture of Spider-Man and I'll bet you that person can tell you AT LEAST that Spidey's real name is Peter Parker and that he was bitten by a radioactive spider.
It’s a shame everything doesn’t fit into the box, but if we’d had the Lewis Tully expansion boxed separately, like Slimer, I think it would have easily all gone in together. It’s the scenario cards that help spice up the somewhat mediocre gameplay, bringing in some twists and goals that make the game feel a little more interesting. It seems part of the problem is the Kickstarter had other issues to do with late arrival, poor communication, limited material available during the campaign etc so a bunch of backers are already pissed. When it was announced that a board game was going to be released on Kickstarter based on this great franchise, I freaked out.As they advance they got unique abilities - Egon becomes better handling the Proton Pack than the others, for example, while Winston becomes your go-to man for sticking trapped ghosts back in the ECTO-1 at range when everyone else must be adjacent.
And seriously, Cryptozoic, how do you make a Ghostbusters game with no rule about crossing the streams?
By the time you start the final mission, there’s a definite sense of ‘been there, done that’ because you’ve encountered the ghosts before. Now it's quite common for Kickstarters to offer early-bird-only deals and these are not always just cosmetic. Ghost cards, on the other hand, list the roll required to hit and to capture, what happens when they get hit, and what happens when the Ghostbuster attacking them misses. All the pieces look great from a distance, although up close the detail is rather soft and undefined. The release was a natural extension of the Ghostbusters films and animated series, adapting 30 years of various lore into one highly customizable experience.
