About this deal
Lagos is the largest city of the western Algarve, with a population of 31,000 - which almost doubles in summer with the influx of tourists. Further ahead is Ponta da Piedade, the highlight of the region: a series of rock formations with impressive jagged shapes and excavated caves that are best enjoyed on a boat trip. Because of the limited space available on the three islands that constitute central Lagos city, industry has been concentrated at estates both inside (Apapa, Ijora, and Yaba) and outside ( Ikeja and Mushin) the city, while the central city has increasingly become a commercial, financial, transportation, and service centre. The 15th century was the golden age for the town of Lagos, with its immediate involvement in the period of the Discoveries.
Many of these evictions follow the Lagos State Governor’s 2016 announcement that authorities would demolish all structures in informal settlements along waterfronts and creeks, to address security concerns. Here, people can avoid the Lagos chaos of overcrowding and terrible traffic congestion – the selling point is that if you can afford to live here, you never need to leave. Like you, we are horrified by the violence and the civilian death toll in Gaza, Israel and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.Canavial, Porto de Mós and Praia da Luz complete the range of beaches, which also include many sandy coves that are hard to get to, some only accessible by sea.
But an eviction becomes a forced eviction when states fail to comply with these important standards, which is what we are seeing in Lagos. There is a lot to love about Lagos, and the city is a favourite with long-stay residents and remote workers. Couples, families with children, backpackers, gay, senior and active travelers will all find Lagos to be perfectly suited for them. More than half the population in Lagos is already under 25, and if there was work for them to do, and the birth rate was to slow down, the economy would get a welcome boost. Ikeja is also home to Fela Kuti's African Shrine, Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi house and Lagbaja's Motherland. As a result, at least 50,000 people have been forcibly evicted from these areas in a violent four-year campaign by Lagos State authorities and police, leaving several dead and tens of thousands homeless. This avenue leads to the sea and the beaches, which are amongst the most beautiful in the Algarve, and often praised by international bodies and magazines. Keep in mind that Portugal’s Algarve region has over 3000 hours of sun per year (compare that to London’s 1450 hours and New York’s 2150 hours), so consider yourself unlucky if you happen to be in town on a rainy or stormy day! The visit is handled via digital technology, explaining the period when slaves were sold in the city.
Lagos has also has the Lekki-Epe International Airport which is a proposed airport in Lekki, Nigeria, designed for a capacity of 5 million passengers annually. The city offers a vibrant nightlife, outstanding restaurants, historical sights and exciting activities, along with day trips to Silves, Sagres or Praia da Luz.
Ponta da Piedade – The picturesque headland to the south of Lagos, formed of highly weathered limestone cliffs that have been carved into unique formations.Fish and shellfish are the main ingredients for a number of delicacies: from snacks with clams, barnacles, octopus or roe, soups and açordas (bread casserole), or specialties such as carapaus alimados (skinned marinated horse mackerel) and stuffed squid. Now Folashade’s livelihood has gone – as has that of many in a community that depended on the sand-dredgers to keep the economy afloat. it is the third largest city in the south west after Ibadan and Lagos and the 12th largest city in Nigeria.
