Though no Cylon envoy would show for the first 39 years, something terrible happened on the 40th anniversary: immediately after a beautiful Cylon in human form appeared on the Armistice Station, the neutral zone was vaporized and a devastating nuclear attack was launched on Caprica and the Twelve Colonies. WROE'S VIRGINS casts a spell on readers from the outset, playing on our expectations and touching a chord of desire that could lead to disaster on nearly every page. Some want to be chosen - the pious old maid and the beautiful egotist with a secret that needs to be hidden. His many prophecies proved remarkably accurate - not least of all his predictions of industrial and scientific advancements and a 'grievous plague' which came unfortunately true when cholera was to hit the town - but many still viewed him as a charlatan. It goes without saying that the Prophet will use them as domestic slaves, overlook many of their virtues and abuse their trust.

John Wroe (19 September 1782 – 5 February 1863) was a British evangelist who founded the Christian Israelite Church in the 1820s after having what he believed were a series of visions. We see each of them grow from their point of entry into the narrative, and although the development isn’t always in a positive direction it’s very believable. Of the three sisters who narrate most of the story, only Joanna has the transcendental innocence men are supposed to dream of.I felt no fear, for I knew myself chosen — I knew, from the arrow of certainty that pierced my heart as the Prophet spoke. When God told John Wroe to comfort himself with seven virgins, his congregation gave him their daughters. If it is even more disagreeable than this house, surely I will be able to summon the energy and courage to run away.

One of them is a socialist looking to reform the world and the other comes to the household more animal than human. For her seven, Rogers chooses: a cripple, a badly beaten mute, two under-age sisters who can barely read, a virtuous saint, a girl donated by her aunt and uncle who does not belong to the congregation and doesn’t believe, and a girl with an illegitimate son. The tall and rangy Pryce may be no one's idea of a hunchbacked dwarf (in fact, he looks more like Mick Fleetwood here than what Wroe himself must have looked like) but he's an imposing presence possessing just the right kind of quicksilver, mercurial quality required to portray such a complex and puzzling figure. Adapted from Jane Rogers' novel, and inspired by actual events, Mr Wroe’s Virgins is set in Ashton-Under-Lyne in the 1830s.
