About this deal

When they go to university in Dublin together, their loyalty is tested by the addition of others to their circle, most notably the beautiful, mysterious Nan, an ambitious young woman determined to rise above her working-class origins. Nan and Simon have a relationship and she even has sex with him – a shocking idea in the very religious society of their time.

This then makes Benny the perfect character to draw us in to this story of a young, gauche girl trying to navigate the new and intimidating world of university, far away from home and all the security she has known.Circle of friends" really kidnapped my heart, especially in such a strange and difficult period that we are living here in Milano,Italy with this Covid -19. There was a discussion in my writing circle only yesterday about describing settings in books, how to do it vividly but discretely. It became all about Benny's 'sexual awakening', which is kind of a part of the book, but there's more to the story than just that. But “Circle of Friends” presents itself as something less than it is: Just another tale of two girls growing up in the 1950s in a tiny Irish village, and coming of age during their first university year in Dublin. They would of been exciting, except Binchy's writing could be so banal, so monotone that it was hard to tell if something truly tragic/joyous happened or Binchy was just stating a fact.

This book starts off very slowly, with an opening chapter regarding the meeting of Benny and Eve (the main characters of the novel). I read your Creating Circles of Friends book from cover to cover over the summer and found it truly inspiring.

The Circle of Friends technique is thus presented in a much broader context than in the original text. Building respectful teams of support around an individual, tapping into that child’s peer group is an extremely powerful way of promoting change and insights for all involved. She knows, further, that he has absolute confidence that she will be his because, in his mind, who else would want a big, strapping horse of a girl like Benny?Benny, the good-natured clown of the group, always seems to draw the short straw in life, while Nan, selfish and very attractive, takes what she wants without expecting to pay for it. I am hoping to work with my schools this year on introducing and persuading them to trust and believe in this very powerful and effective approach. In the middle of the fight, Nan falls through a glass door and is injured enough to have a miscarriage. The book is set in the 1950’s but despite the older setting, it’s very much a case that the problems faced by college going folks never changes. Setting out for university in Dublin - although poor Benny has to come home on the bus every night - the girls' stories become entwined with that of beautiful, ambitious Nan Mahon and college heartthrob Jack Foley.
