About this deal

Although the section includes nowhere near as many of the gritty details surrounding Fred and Rose’s crimes, it still delivers one heck of a shocking punch – exposing the real emotional trauma to what happened and how Stephen and Mae tried to come to terms with what was now being uncovered in their own home. Although the children were unaware of the murders going on, life at 25 Cromwell Street was certainly not wholesome or typical in any way. During this time, in their family home, Rose would have men come to visit her in the bedroom upstairs, whilst the children were left to play in the rooms downstairs. With details of the ordeal the two of them went through throughout and after the time living with their parents, it can be rather harrowing in places. No one else is going to be able to tell this story, as the authors grew up with Fred and Rose and witnessed many strange things.

Indeed, when a man came to visit ‘Mandy’, the children would know that they would have to occupy themselves for a number of hours whilst their mother looked after the visitor. However having read books which were obviously published after I had some knowledge of the goings on already, what was nice to hear was Stephens view point in his own words.

The first of these seconds is by far and away the largest one, dealing with life at 25 Cromwell Street before the body of Heather West was found buried in the backgarden. Inside 25 Cromwell Street reads initially as excerpts from interviews of two of Fred and Rose West's children, later shifting into what seems to be journal entries during the trial of Rose West, followed by a comprehensive timeline of events and examples of letters written to the authors from their parents in jail. And as it did, so the nightmarish hell that had been allowed to breed behind closed doors crossed those final barriers. Indeed, reading about how Fred and Rose’s behaviour gradually worsened, all from the perspective of two of the children who were in their direct line of fire of their horrifying sexual games, is one of the hardest and most terrifying aspects of the book. Other accounts tend to portray Fred and Rose as inhuman monsters, but this story makes them seem fragile, especially towards the end when they are caught.

I read mainly Mysteries and Thrillers, with over half of my reads being Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) directly from the publisher/author. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).

Perhaps I’m being overly cynical here, but it’s an easy assumption to make, and possibly holds a certain amount of truth to it.However, it was Fred West’s obsession with sex that would be the real catalyst for the hell that was forming within the walls of 25 Cromwell St. A piece of advice that instigated Fred into trying it on with one of his own sisters, and subsequently finding himself answering to the police and getting kicked out of the family home. How they didn't throw their parents to the wolves after what they did to them I will never understand! I have long been interested in the case of Fred and Rose West, and this book, written by two of their older children, is the most comprehensive look at what life was like at 25 Cromwell Street that I have found.
